Application Process

Steps required to becoming a member of Urbana Volunteer Fire and Rescue:

Read this and the General Membership Guideline and then complete the Application for Membership form. Submit the form to the Department along with your membership dues of $5.00.  Please be sure that names, phone numbers, and addresses are legible and accurate as your references will be contacted and your employment verified.

After your application has been reviewed and your references verified, you will be contacted by the Membership Committee Chairman to schedule an interview.  At your interview, all membership requirements will be explained.

In addition, all applicants will be required to consent to a criminal background check, conducted by the State of Maryland, Departments of State Police, Office of the State Fire Marshal.  This check is a policy of the Urbana Volunteer Fire & Rescue Department, Inc.  Having a criminal record does not necessarily disqualify an otherwise qualified applicant from joining.  However, failing to reveal that information on the application will immediately terminate the application process.  The request for criminal record check form, will be provided to you, at your interview for signature.

After the above steps have been completed and recommendation of approval from the Board of Directors (generally about 30-60 days) is granted, you will be contacted to appear at the monthly membership meeting for the voting process.

You are welcome to help out at any fundraising events at the station while your application is being processed.  However, you are not allowed to have a key to the station or be in the station unless an Active Member is present with you.  If all active members leave the station you will be required to leave as well.

If you have been a previous member of our Department and at any point were
terminated, requested or advised to resign as a result of improper conduct, or the Department was in the process of taking disciplinary action against you, which resulted in your resignation, your re-application to the Department will be denied.

If you have been a previous member of our Department and resigned under normal terms and are applying for re-admission, you will be required to serve the one-year probationary period.
